Our History

Many people in Europe have never heard of Aioi Nissay Dowa Europe, or our holding company MS&AD holdings, but in Asia we are a household name and we can trace our history back nearly 500 years!

Our Start

1623 Sumitomo Masatomo, a former Buddhist priest started a book shop in Kyoto, before moving into the Copper Refining industry to expand the company wealth.
1673 Mitsui Takatoshi founded a kimono shop with a unique approach to sales. The earliest example of marketing in Japanese history.
1889 Nippon (Nissay) Life Assurance Co., Inc. was formed in in July 1889 by Sukesaburo Hirose and was the first Japanese insurer to offer profit dividends to policyholders.
1944 Dowa Fire and Marine Insurance Company Ltd was founded in Japan. It was later established as a UK branch in 1968.

Our Recent History

1999 Toyota Insurance Management established, set up to act as Toyota's internal insurance competence centre.
2001 Chiyoda and Dai Tokyo merge to form Aioi (Japanese word meaning for coming together).
2001 Merger of Dowa Fire and Marine and Nissay General Insurance to form Nissay Dowa Insurance Company.
2001 Sumitomo Marine and Mitsui Marine merged to form Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Company Limited.
2004 Aioi Motor and General Insurance Company of Europe Ltd. was established in the U.K.
2005 Aioi Nissay Dowa Life Insurance (ANDLIE), ANDIE's subsidiary was established.
2009 Aioi Insurance, Nissay Dowa General Insurance, and Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Group reach a basic agreement on business integration. In conjunction they announced an integration plan, presidents of the holding companies, addresses, descriptions, corporate name, etc.
2010 MSIG changed its name to MS&AD Insurance Group Holdings in April 2010.
2010 Aioi Insurance and Nissay Dowa Insurance merged into "Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance".
